Since its launch, the Hyundai Custin MPV model has received a lot of doubt because this is a joint venture model from the Chinese market, the price is only cheaper and ranked below the Kia Carnival. But sales showed that this rookie had great promise.
It can be said that for many years, the popular MPV segment has become more prosperous when it meets the needs of family travel, has high chassis and low price. Evidence of this is that there are currently more than 8 small MPV models ranging from 500 to more than 700 million VND.
But in the slightly larger segment today there are only a few names such as Toyota Innova, Toyota Innova Cross, Hyundai Custin and Kia Carnival. Among them, Kia Carnival can be considered a monument when it always has overwhelming sales compared to Toyota Innova. As for Hyundai Custin and Toyota Innova Cross, it is a different story.
At the time of launch, the media spent a lot of words talking about the future of these two car models with many different comments and arguments. Especially the price difference is not too big when Innova Cross costs from 810 to 990 million VND and Custin is 850 to 999 million VND.
However, according to sales reports in December, many people were surprised when there were 809 Hyundai Custin cars delivered, this number far exceeded Kia Carnival with only 574 and Toyota Innova Cross with 224 cars. Although these car models all have relatively strong promotions.
According to comments, the reason why Hyundai Custin created a breakthrough is because this is the only car model under 1 billion with a sliding door design, which is also the “niche” that distributors are targeting thanks to the convenience of getting in and out. Cars often park in narrow areas. The Toyota Innova Cross still uses the traditional door style that is no longer popular even though it has an advantage in performance.
In addition, although it is a product between a joint venture between Hyundai and the Chinese BAIC group, Custin still retains its shape based on the Parametric Dynamic design language with a large hexagonal grille integrated with Parametric Hidden LED positioning lights. Lights.
Although the design has a sporty bias, the LED headlights on the car only have the correct lighting function, and the performance can only be evaluated at a normal level. This is also a common weakness of headlight models using LED reflectors. But another plus point is when the rearview mirror cluster is placed on the door instead of the A-pillar, helping to significantly reduce blind spots.
Another notable information is that although it is a joint venture vehicle, Hyundai Custin is still developed based on the company’s N3-platform chassis. The vehicle’s length, width and height correspond to 4,950 x 1,850 x 1,725mm, wheelbase 3,055mm and light clearance at 170mm. The above parameters make it more convenient to avoid potholes or go through bad roads.
It’s quite unfortunate that the car’s turn signal light is designed to be located below the rear bumper area, which is somewhat inconvenient because Vietnam’s traffic density is quite dense, with almost constant tailgating. In the inner city, bad things will happen more easily.
But no matter the design, the interior space is still the deciding factor in the success of a car. For MPV cars, spaciousness is the first prerequisite, luckily Custin’s space is longer than 3.4m, the ceiling is 1m higher and wider than 1.5m and the 2-2-2 seat configuration has helped for the vehicle to ensure comfort for everyone when traveling on a long journey.
Regarding the second row of seats, which is considered the car owner’s seat, it is equipped with many genuine options that the older Hyundai Palisade may not have at a higher price. Specifically, these two seats can be electrically adjusted in 10 directions, the passenger seat can recline up to 135 degrees and has additional foot support.
Not only that, this row of seats also has 2-position memory, and most positions are electrically adjustable. In addition, unique in this two-seat segment, there is also a cooling or heating mode, suitable for all weather conditions. Combined with a flat floor also helps people sitting in the last row move in and out more conveniently.
Hyundai Custin also takes the trouble to flatter users when row 3 also has a chat feature that records the words of the person sitting in the front row and plays them through the speaker system at the back of the car, ensuring the most seamless conversation. In addition, the last seat area also has cooling vents as well as a convenient USB Type charging port.
Returning to the front row, we can see that the cockpit has a somewhat different design language compared to other Hyundai cars in Vietnam. Specifically, the 10.4-inch vertical central screen cluster integrates almost all functions including air conditioning adjustment. The car also supports Apple Carplay/Android Auto and a 6-speaker system.
Despite its large size, the display is not really sharp, and sometimes the touch screen seems slow and out of rhythm. The 4.2-inch electronic instrument cluster and 4-spoke steering wheel have the same design as car models in Vietnam. In addition, the push-button gear lever cluster comes with an electronic handbrake and automatic brake hold.
Originating as a joint venture from a foreign market, Hyundai Custin has a respectable amount of safety equipment. In addition to basic features, this MPV model also has the Hyundai SmartSense driving assistance technology package including LKA lane keeping assist, FCA front collision prevention, Smart Cruise Control, and driver warnings. DAW distraction, BCA blind spot collision prevention assist, RCCA reverse collision avoidance assist, ROA rear seat occupant warning, AHB adaptive automatic headlights. With the above list, it is difficult to have complaints about this MPV model.
During the experience, the driver was somewhat surprised by the 2.0L Smartstream T-Gdi turbocharged gasoline engine with a capacity of 232 horsepower, 353 Nm, comes with a front-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Contrary to boring thinking because after all this is an MPV, the electric power steering gives a quite impressive driving feeling combined with a somewhat short front end, making moving a car longer than 5m easy. hand, no difficulty at all.
When operating at low speeds, the car feels light and not too jerky even though the car is carrying 6 adults. With the advantage of large capacity, Hyundai Custin feels good even when overtaking other vehicles on the highway, including speed ranges beyond 100km/h. The car also has different driving modes, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference. If you’re very observant, you’ll be able to feel the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal in each different driving mode.
But from here, some limitations of the Hyundai Custin began to appear when the noises from the undercarriage crept into the space inside the car, especially the last row of seats and became more obvious when entering the seats. rough or cement road. Next, the suspension system is no longer stable when running at speeds of over 100km/h or more. If you are more observant, you will feel the sideways shaking when changing lanes at the above speed.
Of course, with the traffic density in Vietnam, these weaknesses will not greatly affect the user experience. In addition, because it is smaller in size than the Kia Carnival, the rear luggage compartment cannot be spacious.
To be fair, with a price of less than 1 billion, Hyundai Custin is still a reasonable choice for a multi-purpose vehicle with high ground clearance, airy engine, and many equipment even though it still does not have hybrid technology like Toyota Innova Cross. In addition, the interior space is still not comparable to the Kia Carnival, but to save from 220 to 440 million VND, it is also something worth considering.
