In Malaysia, while plugging in the charger at the company’s charging station, the Mercedes-Benz EQB luxury electric car suddenly caught fire.
Local media said that around the afternoon of December 31, 2023, at a battery charging station outside a dealership in Johor state, Malaysia, an electric vehicle suddenly caught fire. A firefighting team of more than 10 people focused on successfully extinguishing the fire.
According to the image, the fire may have originated from the exterior, not from the vehicle’s battery. Because the scene was still bright after putting out the fire, it proved that it did not take much time to handle the fire, because most electric vehicle fires take a lot of time to extinguish, sometimes up to 24 hours.
Photos taken show that the burned car appears to be the Mercedes-Benz EQB electric car model with a converted selling price of 1.58 billion VND in Malaysia. Unconfirmed information indicates that the car was being plugged in to charge at the station when it suddenly exploded.
After the fire, no one was injured, but the Mercedes-Benz was almost completely burned. Mercedes showroom and charging station were also damaged about 10 – 20%. Currently, police continue to investigate further the cause of the fire. Many sources believe that the fire may not have been caused by the electric vehicle battery but had some other impact.
Currently, incidents related to electric vehicles, especially fires and explosions, often receive more attention than vehicles using traditional engines. Because this is a new type of vehicle, and is required in the future and there are still many people skeptical about the quality.
Especially the battery pack on the car, which is very difficult to extinguish using conventional methods if a fire or explosion occurs. The cause is believed to be chemical reactions, negative-positive ion displacement inside the battery cluster, so it does not need oxygen but can still burn and is very difficult to extinguish. Currently, the method to put out fires caused by batteries is to isolate the fire source and wait for the chemical reaction to finish before the fire stops burning.
In Vietnam, Mercedes-Benz EQB was launched around the end of the third quarter of 2023, the car is officially distributed and imported in complete units from the US market with a selling price from 2,289 billion VND. The car is equipped with an electric motor with a capacity of 190 horsepower, 384 Nm and comes with a 66.5 kWh battery that can operate a maximum of 422 – 473 km after a full charge.
